Hada labo 3-in-1 whitening gel,

Hada labo 3-in-1 whitening gel

After using Hada Labo's hydrating lotion 2 years ago, I have never looked back! It indeed surprises me on how a shelf-displayed facial product can be so effective and yet not traumatize my sensitive skin, brought it along with me to battle the London winter blues and dryness - and it has since been a travel necessity of mine, definitely hope to find time to review that one day. But for today, I'm reviewing another product of Hada Labo: the 3-in-1 arbutin whitening perfect gel.

Stumbled across the Sample store, which is an online store which distributes sample and allows us to find suitable products in the easiest way! It's free to sign up so no harm trying it out ♥  I love the concept because I've always been a fan of sample-sized products for its ingenuity of allowing consumers to do a try-before-we-buy (learnt it the hard way when I recently bought a Les soins Bio Plante system makeup remover which was a huge no-no for my sensitive skin) and also because samples make amazing travel accessories, especially with the not more than 100ml rule on airplane cabin bags. And when I saw an opportunity to collaborate on a Hada Labo review on a different product, I was pretty happy! I was given a retail-sized pot of Hada Labo perfect gel (3-in-1 whitening gel) to try out, and it arrived in a nifty yet gorgeous re-sealable bag - plus points for packaging, I was really impressed because it seemed more like a gift than anything ♥

It was also bubble-wrapped all over for extra protection and to ensure it that the product remains intact:

How the gel looks like in store shelves:

Hada Labo's skincare philosophy stems from its name of Perfect x Simple, where their facial product range brings beauty back to the basics - perfect, simple and confident. Akin to one of my favourite other products, Dermalogica which originated from the US, Hada Labo also believes in a stripped down approach of "Nothing more, nothing less" where more ingredients does not mean it's beneficial for our skin. I love how they believe in emphasizing simplicity in its skin care processes, and their products don't have the unnecessary additives, colourings fragrance and mineral oils that many other shelf-brands claim to not have but secretly possess. Originating from Japan, it is definitely suited and compatible with Asian skins - plus their products are effective yet don't burn a hole in your pocket.

The product itself is a translucent gel and looks pretty unassuming like any other moisturizer or serum, I love how it's translucent because I simply can't deal with opaque moisturizers (more about that later in the post). There is also no smell, unlike other moisturizers in the market. The consistency is in between a hair gel and a runny moisturizing lotion, so you can easily scoop it up from the pot. A small scoop like this is perfect for a thin layer over the entire face, and I use it mainly after my afternoon shower so it gets absorbed easily! It can also be used as a night gel so it works its magic when you're asleep :)

After applying some onto my hand, the gel is absorbed extremely quickly after a few seconds and leaves no residual. However, after a few minutes I feel as if a thin layer has formed over my skin, and it feels like it's tightening - not too sure if you can see the difference in both my hands below (pardon my veins) but there's a slight difference: the left seems more hydrated, eve though I haven't tried it long enough to review on its whitening properties. But in terms of hydration for Hada Labo, I'm always a fan! I wasn't a fan of the thin layer formed though, so I would not wear this out without some powder.

Tip: But of course, I have extremely sensitive skin as mentioned, so before I start using any products, I usually carry out a mini experiment to make sure that it does not contain any paraffin, silicon or is too rich in oil for my skin to handle. A small tip from my dermatologist is that most moisturizers which are opaque still do contain a minimal amount of oil because it needs that's the only way the base emulsifier can work on - so if you have combination or oily skin, it's best to go for moisturizers that are clear (e.g. collagen or hydroluronic acid based).

Apart from doing a patch test on either the tip of my ears or my arms near the elbow, I'll put a small dap of the product on a piece of paper and leave it overnight. Through the night, the product will ripple into a bigger blob and I read it somewhere on a magazine that the oil present in the product will diffuse outwards, so you can use your own judgement call to see if your skincare product is too rich for you. For demonstration purposes, I tried comparing the gel with Dermalogica's active moist - a moisturizer I loved about 5 years ago until I realized that it caused me breakouts, and you can see how much more oil Active moist has as compared to the gel.

After a day, the center of the blob will contain some residue. Here, the Dermalogica sample felt like a thick concoction of oil and lotion while the Hada labo one felt like sticky melted plastic, which I later found out from the ingredients list that it may be hydrolyzed collagen. The end results were captured against the sunlight so the diffused ingredients can be seen more clearly.

Review: Dermalogica products

Developed by the International Dermal Institute (IDI) based in the US, Dermalogica is an established brand that has been in the market since 1986. I've been a fan of the brand for almost 7 years now, and what I really love about their products is that they are free of chemical irritants such as alcohol, mineral oils, fragrance and colourings. Many shelf brands claim to be free of these chemicals, but may rely on marketing loopholes to justify these claims and hence may not be true. Their packaging is fuss-free and extremely simple, as their objective is to win over consumers with their effective products and not attractive marketing ploys - this resonates with their "We're not pretty tagline".

Internationally, Dermalogica has won awards and gained recognition through various platforms such as InStyle, Harper's Bazaar and even Vogue. Personally, even though these products are quite pricey, my skin is really sensitive, so I really appreciate how these products have helped to stabilize its condition. And I love how the brand launched a Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship (FITE) initiative which helps fund micro-loans to women entrepreneurs in developing countries. With each product purchased, you get a short code to input into the website and help contribute to the campaign! Talk about female empowerment in the entrepreneurship sector ♥

1. Daily microfoliant

This has been hailed to be the holy grail of Dermalogica products by many, which helps to exfoliate the dead skin cells from your face. Suitable for all skin conditions, it is made from a rice-based powder formula which activates enzymes when in contact with water to help achieve a smooth finish; while the ingredient blend of green tea, ginkgo and colloidal oatmeal helps to calm the skin. It's extremely gentle and doesn't give you a raw harsh finish after washing it off - I love it! It's suitable for daily use, but I advise using it just 2-3 times a week for the best results (I use it lesser now because I just got myself a Clarisonic mia, which I'm extremely excited to share about!). Over time, this exfoliant helps to even out the skin tone and reveal the newer skin below. But while the smooth finish is additive, don't overuse it because it can be damaging to your skin.

The therapist also advised on the proper way of using the product: using a half teaspoon of the microfoliant and some drops of water, create a creamy paste in your palm and massage it gently over your face. Leave it on for about 1 minute as a mini mask and let the enzymes work its magic and gently remove it thereafter. This is especially perfect for days when your skin feels dry from the air conditioning yet sensitive from the sun, but you would like to get rid of the dull tone.

Another tip for storing this product is that if you plan to keep it in your bathroom, store it in a drawer or cupboard because the the shower steam may cause the microbeads to clump together. Especially in the humid climate of Singapore, storing it in a dry place is advisable!

2. Sebum clearing masque

This clay-based masque helps to absorb excess face oil and prevent further breakouts through detoxification, but the difference between this and the other masques is the presence of salicylic acid which helps to exfoliate. The botanical ingredients in the masque helps to refine and purify, and I love the refreshing sensation after washing it off. While I don't really fancy the slight tingling sensation when the masque is on, it doesn't really irritate my skin so after the tingling goes away, it's quite a pampering treat :) The oil control is extremely effective for up to a day.

Just like any other masque, a thin smooth layer is to be applied to the towel-dried face (don't put it near the eye area because it can be quite drying for these areas) and leave it on for about 10 minutes or so, this can be repeated 2-3 times a week depending on necessity. You can even dab it on for overnight spot treatment.

It's my first time doing a beauty review, so I hope this helps to spread some invaluable advice for these products ♥ You can get Dermalogica products from Aster Spring stores in Singapore (formerly known as Leonard drake skincare) or from online stores such as Strawberrynet or Alyalley which sells them at discounted prices. Ciao!

DIY lip scrub,

DIY Lip scrub

When I was overseas, the cold winter was often accompanies by the typical sight of dry chapped lips. Now, even though I'm back home in eternal summer (aka Singapore), spending copious amounts of time in air conditioning is inevitable and this can be really drying for the lips. This makes it extremely hard for lip balm or lipstick to stay on, and having bits of dead skin on your lips is not only unsightly but also really uncomfortable. I always can't resist peeling them and they only get worse towards the end of the day. Brands like Lush and The Body shop have lip exfoliants - but for such a trivia matter, they come with a heavy price tag. So why not make this DIY simply with four ingredients which you can find lying around your kitchen!

Ingredients:
2.5 tablespoon olive oil
2 flat tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 teaspoon of lip balm (for flavour)

DIY Lip scrub ingredients

The amount of each ingredient can be varied, depending on how much you want to make (tip: make some for the weeks ahead by keeping it sealed in an airtight container). Olive oil can be substituted by other forms of oil such as Vitamin E capsules or Primrose oil. White sugar is used instead of brown sugar because it's grainer and gives a better exfoliating finish, while honey helps to bind the concoction together and sweetens the deal. I added in some lip balm to make the consistency smoother, and to give it a bit of colour and cranberry flavour bonus! You can try adding Vaseline if you want the consistency to be extra smooth :)

DIY Lip scrub ingredients

Mix the ingredients and viola, DIY lip scrub! Massage them on your lips gently for about 30 seconds and pucker up ♥

There was even an essential oils counter where you could mix'n match potions, with other products
in the classic trolley pick up style (albeit the steep prices)
